Healing Resources
As an organization that focuses a lot of its work on awareness, we thought that it would be a great help to our community if we provided a reading list on the topics of sexual abuse and awareness.
Depending on your reading preference, age and the type of sexual abuse you or a loved one have experienced, we hope you connect with one or more books on our preferred reading list:
The Courage to Heal
This comprehensive book explores how to move into your future by coming to terms with past abuse through hundreds of first-person accounts and steps each person took towards healing. Currently, in its 20th edition, the book also features research on the brain and trauma, healing tools such as imagery and meditation, and an extensive resource guide.
Beyond Betrayal
This book, specifically written by Dr. Gartner for men who are survivors of sexual abuse, looks deeper into the different types of abuse and how each type can have an overpowering effect on a man’s self-worth and self-concept. It also dives into the issues that can come with intimate relationships after experiencing abuse. Much of the book focuses on situations seen through Dr. Gartner’s clinical practice and what types of coping mechanisms and recovery tools were implemented for healing.
Not Marked
In Not Marked, author Mary DeMuth, a sexual abuse survivor, shares her path from being shame-filled to joy-filled and explores how to have the courage to share your story and understand how God designed you to heal. The book also includes insight from Mary’s husband, Patrick, who discusses how to love a sexual abuse victim and strengthen marriage through healing.
